Poster: Second Stage Editing

I started to put my text on it. I had thought about using another text but I thought it was personal to the other products and the artist so wanted to use the same as used not he digipak.

I put the date down when the album is being released underneath the album title. I wanted the title of the album to be the title of the song I used for the music video so the audience can identify all my products together.

I placed all of my text in the middle to centre the audience's attention. I started to look deeper at how clear 'JAXON' was and I don't think the position of all the text suited my genre of music and it followed the typical conventions of a music album poster and wanted to go against this.

I then moved 'JAXON' to the top right and 'if i lose myself' and the date to the left. I then noticed that the date was too bold and harsh on my picture so I decreased the size of the text and placed the text in the dap where there is a pure black background. This was important because it made it clear to see.

I also added the institutional information of the record label Interscope and the different social media's that my artist is involved with. This is essential because my target audience are generally teenagers/young adults, who use a lot of social media platforms so the easy for them to access the music, the more likely they are to listen to it.

Poster: First Stage Editing

I originally put a base layer of Will and layered a graffiti picture on top. I wanted to infuse the graffiti theme onto the poster to match the digipak and music video. I rubbed out the picture so that the graffiti was just on his skin. I made sure there wasn't an obvious line between the picture on the screen and it fading onto his skin.

The picture was too bold because of the black parts of the art. I played about with the opacity of the graffiti to see which looked the best.

Digipak: Near Finish

I have to add a few more things, such as a CD holder, spines with information on and more manipulation to the images of Mason and Ellie

New Actor

Learning comments:

We changed our actor for lip syncing and this is his character profile. The reason for using Will instead of Mason is stated above - we felt it was essential to have a lip syncer that was confident in what they were doing. We could visually see that Mason was out of his comfort zone lip sycning and we noticed his strength was in acting for the narrative so it was essential for us to find somebody more suitable for our genre of music, the song and OneRepublic. Will is perfect for lip sycning because he dresses like OneRepublic so he is very visually suited for this.

Fast Pace Editing for Chorus: 3rd Stage

I wanted to include layers of Will not lip syncing so the audience became familiar with him. I wanted to infuse more graffiti art in the music video so the base layer is a clip of writing the layer cut aways of Will, not lip syncing just moving about.

I added some scenery shots so it was more visualising. The cut away's were from Weston, harbourside and town centre.

Fast Pace Editing for Chorus: 2nd Stage

I had taken a long length shot which I intended to include in the fast pace editing stage and it was perfect to layer clips onto because there wasn't anything visual doing on in the base clip, so by layering it with fast clips, it would make it lively and this sticks to the song.

During the long clip I zoomed in so I had to cut it out and add the next part of the clip, ensuring they were the same. I layered a clip of Ellie at this point to make it less obvious of this cut, ensuring smoothness in the base clip.

I added 2 clips of the same things but from different points in the clip so make the movement fast pace and then accompanied this with a single shot of Ellie on the way to meet Mason. Showing both of the actors traveling makes it clear to the audience that they are traveling to meet each other, which is later shown when they are at Weston together.

Fast Pace Editing for Chorus: 1st Stage

This it the first stage of my fast pace editing. I had filmed a variety of different shots of all around town and the harbour side because I knew the song has a lot of beats in and I had to ensure the shots kept up to the pace. I also had to ensure it was quick and included lots f different cutaways to make it very visual and kept the audience engaged throughout the chorus.

I added a shot that I was basing from and layered it with other cutaways. I took a long shot of walking and came up with the idea of including art. The reason for this was because I wanted to infuse the art theme which was included on my digipak and poster.

I switched it around and included an art base and had layers of settings.

I cut directly on the beat which was easy because there are constant beats throughout the chorus.

Layering of Footage

After a review of our editing, we had noticed there were just basic shots of the lip syncing with no cuts. We started to layer shots and this gave it some pace, making it more visual.

We then started altering the pace of the shots of him moving about so it wasn't just him lip syncing.

Digipak: Movement of Text

I got all of the songs from OneRepublic's 'Native' album, which includes the track 'If I Lose Myself'. I increased the picture's opacity so make the text on top clear to see. I originally put the text to the left so see how it looked but then I started to look into previous OneRepublic's albums and how the text was set out.

I tried changing the position of the text to be gravitated to the middle. It looked misplaced and due to the background being really bold and lots going on so it made the picture very hectic. The text also didn't come out cleared and I noticed that to the right of my picture was more clear than the left.

I experimented and put the text to the right. I thought it was a lot clearer and it allowed the man to be visible. I duplicated the layer of text and positioned them on top of each other. This made it bold and clearer to see. This is how I have kept it for my digipak.

Replacement of Scenes

We added some clips from Severn Beach and Harbourside to fill gaps.

We then replaced these with text because it made it clearer to sit so we knew which parts needed replacing or changing. We wanted to make sure the same scene was used in their own half of the song, for example, only shots from Town and Harbour to be used for the first half of the song and only shots from Weston were to be used for the second half song. The reason for doing this was to make it clear to the audience that they are traveling to each other.

More Fast Pace Editing

This was another sections which was left for me to edit quickly to. For this I would use shots all from the Pier and the beach.

Addition and Change of Lip Syncing

The parts which we were replacing for Will's lip syncing parts, we added a title for the exact amount of time needed to ensure the rest of the idea was on time.

We added these clips with the correct lip syncing. We then edited it down to ensure the desired words were synced. This was really easy because I had filmed large sections of the song so we had lots of footage to edit.

Adding Clips from Weston-Super-Mare

We started adding the clips we shot in Weston. We dded these clips n the second half of the song because we wanted to give the illusion that they were traveling to meet each other.

We added the parts where lip syncing was needed to be added. This made it clear during the editing process because we knew they were purposely not fixed because they were specifically for lip syncing.

We ensured that we added intimate shots of Mason and Ellie to show them together.

Pace of Shot

We did't want all of the shots consisting of the same basic movement so we increased and decreased the pace of some of the shots. This was only done to specific ones due to what was in the shit. For example, where there was a shot of a bungee jump, due to the action because really quick, we decreased the speed by about 20% to slow down the fast pace of the song because even thought we knew the importance of having fast paced editing and movement of shots, it was nice to see a wind down of action on the screen.

Fast Editing Preparation

During the fast parts of the song, like the chorus. Leah and I agreed that I was best to do it because i was the main filmer so I knew which clips I had specifically filmed for the fast, chorus parts. Leah put the specific time that I needed to fill. She felt more comfortable doing the other shots so she put all the other shots in for the rest of the song and allowed me to add my parts when possible.

Adding Lip Syncing

Once we had filmed the lip syncing, it was simple to add it into the slots where we had specified. We filmed a variety of shots of a long length of lip syncing so we were sure enough was covered.

Preparation for Lip Syncing

Where we wanted lip-syncing to be, we added clips and wrote on them the words we needed lip synced and put this to the specific amount of time dependant on time spent to sing the lyrics. This helped when coming to filming because it was clear which parts needed focus and it helped when coming to editing because we knew which clips needed to be added where.

First Stages of Editing

We initially put the clips on that we filmed from Bristol into iMovie. I initially formed the beginning because it was fast paced and Leah is more comfortable with doing the narrative and the slower paced bits of the song. I filmed everything so I am familiar with the shots taken. I wanted to make sure the shots weren't all transitioned the same and had the same pace.

I added a cross dissolve between the first 2 shots because they were both the same but because of the long musical introduction, we needed something to be moving continuously so this made the transition very smooth.

I then changed the pace of the next clip to make it go faster because it was a clip of a ferris wheel going around.

I put the effect of the next clip being revered. When I done this, I was just experimenting but it looked really good and fit with the pace of the song and the previous shots.

Filming in the Studio - 2nd December

We reviewed our video with our teacher and we all agreed that our actor, Mason, wasn't comfortable at all with the lip syncing. We arranged with one of my friend's to lip sync the song. He was amazing at acting and we thought this would show his confidence. He wasn't massively familiar with the song or it's lyrics but after a few times of us playing each section of it, he got familiar with the lyrics, how the words were said, etc.

Initially, only 1 of the lights was working so we filmed some with just one light on then we managed to turn the other light on. We put the black ground down and this created a scene as if he was on stage, which was exactly what we wanted. He was struggling with some of the lip syncing but we broke up each sentence and filmed in snippets. This made it easier for him to properly lip syncing and remember the lyrics and it also allowed me to film him in a variety of shots, giving it variety and making sure it doesn't get tedious.

His lip syncing is amazing in all of the shots and we will be using most of them. We may need to re-film some stuff due to the lighting, the angles used or his lip syncing.

Filming in Weston-Super-Mare - 26th November

I had previously planned what we needed to film this day. I printed it out and referred to this throughout filming times to ensure we had the desired shots.

Me and Ellie set out earlier to get some shots before Mason and Leah came. There was complications with train lines so we arrived in Weston later than planned but I was still able to get singular shots of Ellie walking along and some pictures for my digipak. Mason and Leah shortly arrived afterwards. I was freezing but the sun was shining and the sky was clear so we filmed as much as we could.

We then realized the Pier was closing within the next hour so we got on there as soon as possible. The wind was strong because we were on the sea front so when they were running along with the red fabric, it moved in the wind, going behind them and this was perfect. The shots on the pier were minimal because most of the rides had been shut off but we filmed a few of them.

We were both very happy with the shots taken in Weston and will not need to re-film them.
